Undergraduate Teaching
I teach undergraduate classes in epistemology (theory of knowledge), metaphysics (the nature of reality), the philosophy of language, early analytic philosophy (Frege, Russell, and Wittgenstein’s Tractatus), and the philosophy of mind.
Graduate Teaching
Here are the graduate classes I’ve taught, with descriptions of the more recent ones.
Spring 2022 – Foundations of Expressivism (cotaught with Nate Charlow)
This is coming up….
Spring 2021 – New Books in the Philosophy of Language (cotaught with Phil Kremer)
We worked through Mark Richard Meanings as Species; Robbie Williams The Metaphysics of Representation; and Stephen Yablo Aboutness. Each of the authors visited for a Q&A about his book.
Fall 2017 – Communication (co-taught with Nate Charlow)
In the first half of term we will set ourselves up with some foundations for the philosophical study of communication, reading Frege, Grice, Kaplan, Recanati, Searle, Stalnaker, and Gibbard. In the second half of term we will move on to contemporary debates.
Fall 2016 – Perception and Epistemology (co-taught with David James Barnett)
We looked at a range of topics centred on the epistemic role of perception.
Summer 2015 – Philosophy of Mind: Perception, Thought and Consciousness
We covered a range of topics centred on the interface between perception and thought, including the distinction between conceptual and non-conceptual mental states; perception as a source of knowledge; cognitive phenomenology; and what is missing from accounts of the intentionality of thought that leave subjective awareness out.
Spring 2014 – Philosophy of Mind: Perception, Ontology, Singular Thought
We worked through Siegel The Contents of Visual Experience; Soteriou The Mind’s Construction; and Recanati Mental Files. Each of the three authors came to a session of the class to field questions about his or her book.
Fall 2011 – Sense after Frege
We started with some sessions on Frege himself, then traced some central lines of development in philosophers’ understanding of the notion of Fregean sense, reading Dummett, Evans, Campbell, Heck, and some other people.
Academic year 2010-2011 – Reference and Communication (year-long cross-listed seminar for graduate students and upper level undergraduates)
We started with Frege and worked through a range of topics in the philosophy of language and mind, having a look at Quine, Grice, Davidson, Kaplan, Stalnaker, and Lewis, and ending up with the contemporary debates about contextualism vs minimalism (Recanati, Bach, Stanley, Borg).
